First of all, I want to roll up my own characters, and I don't see how them developing romantic interests will work without some heavyweight scripting, or the game having far too much control of my characters. Now if there's some light romance "love interest" story, that might not be so bad, though I'd rather skip it anyway. But in all the games I've seen it in it's just cringeworthy. I mean, maybe this kind of thing could work in an absurdist game, or one that was trying to deliberately make a point that I'm in some unrecognizable society where the rules work entirely differently. If the current romances in Bioware are expert, then I never want to see romancing in games again. Again: I may like vanilla ice cream, but that doesn't mean that once in awhile I'd also like some chocolate. We have plenty of the other sort already.

Bear in mind, Skyleaf, that the entire point of bringing back these old series is to bring back their sub-genres.

It's not an RPG expanded from linear story, but more like a relatively open dungeon crawler where the greater story in which you take place is uncovered as you put the pieces together.Įxactly. Heck even the 'star' character class of each game wasn't required to play the way through, except in one point where they'd be most helpful if not required. But I guess it's the same style of party creation as Wasteland 2.īasic character templates, some stat randomization and customization to start, custom name, even a party structure you decide for yourself. So you're saying the party of six will be made up entirely of custom made characters that we, the player, create? The only way I can think it could be done would be to do like Wizardry: Tale of the Forsaken Land and have a main character proper in addition to the standard party ciphers. But this is a CRPG, and the realistic limits make anything too involved and personal to the characters difficult if not impossible. Sure, in an actual RPG it would be possible to role play these things. And how about intra-party romance? How's that going to be implemented into the game? Or just how Borg like the party really is. And they can't be the same choices without making blatant just how little character the choices offer. How's that supposed to work? You going to create dialog trees for each character? Just imagine a simple dialog where not only do you have the standard choices, but choices for each character. That means writing much more romance stuff to allow for the choosing part.

Writing romance in choose your own adventure style is even trickier, especially since you want to lend a feeling of agency to the player. The problem is that we're talking about a game with an entire party of ciphers. I won't deny the effectiveness of good voice acting, but that's not the problem. Judging from CD Projekt's history, I'm sure it'll have romance in it but that game's a couple of years away. It's just my opinion, I hope no offence is taken.Īpart from PoE and T:ToN, I'm highly anticipating Cyberpunk 2077. I could have had my fill playing Dragon Age: Inquisition but that game was a bit of a letdown. Bard's Tale is set in a fantasy world much like PoE and D:OS so it's become a little redundant. I've had some excellent gaming experience this past year that it's hard to get excited about new games unless there are elements in the game that differs from the pack. Then there's Pillars of Eternity and Numenera to come.

Since then, I played a host of romance free RPG games like Skyrim, Divinity: Original Sin, Wasteland 2 and more. The last game I've played with romance in it was Mass Effect 3, which I thought was done brilliantly. I hope for BT to be romance free (except for romance that is played for laughs, I could accept that). Get your concentrated dose there, then you can appreciate the contrast to games like WL2 again. AFAIK they all have romances.Īlso there are a lot of indie games nowadays that are heavy on romance, for example sims like Magical Diary. The "romance" an NPC tried on me was cringeworthy), Dragon Age or Mass Effect. Meganothing wrote:Skyleaf, romance is the speziality of Bioware nowadays.
