The girl standing nearby, thankful that you removed Sudowoodo, will give you an Oran Berry, a Pecha Berry and a Berry Pots, a key item in which you can grow berries, which do not grow on trees in HGSS. Sudowoodo will disappear forever when you either catch it or knock it out.Īfter Sudowoodo is cleared out, you'll have opened up the path between Ecruteak City, Violet City and National Park. If you want to use Sudowoodo, you should soft reset until you encounter one with Rock Head. It comes at level 20, knowing Flail, Low Kick, Rock Throw and Mimic, and is fairly usable in-game due to its decent physical stats and movepool. Sudowoodoĭespite its appearance, Sudowoodo is actually a pure Rock-type Pokemon, which explains it name and why it attacks you for sprinkling water on it. Like Snorlax in Kanto, the tree turns out to be a path-blocking Pokemon, Sudowoodo, who will enter into a battle with you. You'll find a girl from Goldenrod's flower shop looking at the suspicious tree, so talk the tree to use your Squirtbottle on it. Below the Psychic is a Cut tree that, when removed, opens a quick shortcut back to Route 35 but for now, continue west. The School Kid will ask to exchange phone numbers, which you should do because he'll occasionally call to give you Fire Stones if you befriend him. There are also two Trainers here: a Psychic who uses two Abra and a Kadabra and, to his right, a School Kid with a Tangela. Also new is Stantler, a Normal-type who can be useful in-game due to Intimidate and Hypnosis. In the grass, new Pokemon include the first Fire-types available for Chikorita or Totodile players: Vulpix in SoulSilver and Growlithe in HeartGold either is fine. Right now, Route 36 is another stopgap route as you enter, grab the Blue Apricorn from the tree in front of you. Go through the outpost to the south of the Soothe Bell to reach Route 36. You'll find TM 28 - Dig on the left path and a Soothe Bell, which increases a Pokemon's happiness when held, to the right.
At the Park's northern end, look for the hole in the fence next to a boy holding a DS you can go through it to explore the perimeter. Speak to the teacher sitting with her Persian east of the entrance to receive a Quick Claw, which gives its holder a small chance to attack first. The wild grass is completely avoidable, but holds the diurnal Grass-type Sunkern, who has the worst overall stats in the game and evolves into the fabulouth Sunflora, as well as four Trainers: a School Kid with an Oddish and Voltorb a Lass who has another Oddish and a Cubone a male Pokefan with a Raichu and a female Pokefan with a Snubbull. National Park, when not holding the Bug Catching Contest, is a rather peaceful place. For now, enter National Park through the right exit in Route 35's outpost. See the Pokeathlon guide for more information.
Also, you can go through the left exit to find a new character, Magnus, who is an older man with a Poliwrath he'll bring you to a new area in HGSS, which is where you can partake in the Pokeathlon, a new sidequest that replaces Contests. See the Bug Catching Contest guide for more information, but keep in mind that the Contest is the first area where you can find the Caterpie family in SoulSilver, the Weedle family in HeartGold and Scyther or Pinsir in either. You can talk to the man at the counter on Tuesday, Thursday or Saturday to talk part in the Johto Bug Catching Contest, which makes its return from GSC. This outpost leads to two different sidequests in HGSS.
New in the grass are the rare Bug/Flying-type Yanma and both genders of Nidoran, who can be useful due to the TM versatility of their evolutions. If you explore the right path, you'll find a Parlyz Heal, TM66 - Payback, a Bird Keeper with a Pidgey and Pidgeotto (sound familiar?) and a Bug Catcher with a Venonat. The main path has six trainers who use incredibly underleveled Pokemon: a Camper with two Diglett and a Zubat another with a Sandshrew and a Marill a Picnicker who has a Vulpix another who uses Pikachu a Firebreather using two Magmar a Juggler who owns four Voltorb (hilariously, one is Level 2) and another nocturnal Policeman with two Growlithe. Route 35, while slightly expanded since GSC, is a simple route with its main path on the left and some fenced off grass to the right.
